Did you know that Blacksburg has its own wind turbine?  I didn't either, honestly, until last night, when I attended a focus group to discuss sustainable energy sources as part of the Town's Climate plan.

    http://blacksburgwindpower.com/

There's information about the project, and real-time stats.  Something interesting I learned ... those high-gust winds we often get in winter?  Blacksburg doesn't have the sustained winds necessary to make energy sourced from wind turbines feasible ... but the counties of Giles and Floyd do.  Co-op, anyone?

... the [Blacksburg] Motor Company building has received Platinum LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the first building in Southwest Virginia to receive this highest standard of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and the sixth in the state.
See the full press release via blacksburg.gov

The renovation was certainly controversial, but it's nice to see sustainable design being emphasized ...

    Week of July 12
Due to bad weather, the traffic switch from the east side of Main Street to the west side (Virginia Tech) is now planned for Thursday. This is the beginning of Phase 2 (1.76mb pdf) of the project. After the traffic switch, pavement will be demolished starting on the College Avenue side heading north.

    Week of July 23
A storm drain will be installed and there will be a temporary sidewalk closure on Old Main Street. A sanitary sewer will also be installed in the evening. This will require some evening work to minimize the impact on traffic.

See these updates, and pics of College Ave and Main Street back when Virginia Tech was first founded, here.  For information on the project as a whole, click here.

In one of the most poorly kept secrets in a long time, Taylor's Frames & Things is being repurposed to be a tavern.

    http://www.roanoke.com/news/nrv/251199

On the one hand, I like taverns.  I've been known to visit one or three.  But does Blacksburg need another place to grab a bite and a pint?  I lean towards not, but then maybe I'll change my mind when I see the beer list.  Wonder if they'll have a blog and engaging web presence, like @622North ... while the food at 622 North is not what I was expecting quality-wise, it's good to see a business getting involved.

Seems like a tavern could do the same - I mean, it worked for Cheers, right?

    • Blacksburg Christiansburg bicycling commute

My buddy Ryan and I were talking about the lack of infrastructure in the US to accommodate safe bicycling, and he showed me this video.  It's from rush hour in the Netherlands.

From the video description (bolding is mine):

Morning rush hour in the 4th largest city in the Netherlands. Streets look like this when 33% of ALL trips are made by bicycle!

This is an ordinary Wednesday morning in April 2010 at around 8.30 am. Original time was 8 minutes that were compressed into 2 minutes, so everything is 4 times faster than in reality. The sound is original.

This is one of the busiest junctions in Utrecht a city with a population of 300,000. No less than 18,000 bicycles and 2,500 buses pass here every day. And yet Google Street View missed it. Because private motorized traffic is restricted here.

These cyclists cross a one way bus lane (also used by taxis and municipal vehicles), two light rail tracks and then a one way street that can be used by private vehicles.

Behind the camera is a railway (you can hear the squeaking sounds of the trains passing) and the main railway station is very close too. A number of rental bikes from the station pass and many of the cyclists will have come by train for the first part of their commute.

For those who frown upon the total absence of bike helmets in this video, consider these findings from a US study:

"Cycling in the Netherlands is much safer than in the USA. The Netherlands has the lowest non-fatal injury rate as well as the lowest fatality rate, while the USA has the highest non-fatal injury rate as well as the highest fatality rate. Indeed, the non-fatal injury rate for the USA is about 30 times higher than for the Netherlands.

Injury rate per million km cycled: USA 37.5; NL 1.4
Fatality rate per 100 million km cycled: USA 5.8; NL 1.1"

From: Pucher, John and Buehler, Ralph (2008) 'Making Cycling Irresistible: Lessons from The Netherlands, Denmark and Germany'.

Our injury - and fatality rates - are so much higher in part because our motorists aren't taught to look for bicyclists, and our bicyclists are distracted, as well.  But the video is just further proof that, given the proper infrastructure and awareness, bicycle commuting isn't just an "alternative" transportation - it's one of the original forms of motorized transportation.
