This issue came up today as I was setting new signs - "are real estate
signs safety threats?"

A neighbor came out to chat as I was placing a sign, and asked that
since her house was laid out exactly like the house for sale, perhaps
I'd consider not putting out a sign that shows photos of the interior
because it would be a safety concern. An example of such a sign is
below:

Tue, 22 Mar 2011 13:04:45 -0700 Broadband in the New River Valley http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/broadband-in-the-new-river-valley http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/broadband-in-the-new-river-valley

What's keeping broadband connectivity - high-speed internet - from permeating all corners of the New River Valley?  According to Andrew Michael Cohill:

"Ownership and governance are the issues," said Cohill, noting that when those two issues are resolved, the actual implementation of broadband in the region was not an obstacle.

Ownership and governance. Meaning who gets a piece of the pie.

From The Roanoke Times - "Forum Offers No Clear Answer for Broadband".  You can read up on Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam's blog, as well.

Wed, 23 Feb 2011 08:28:47 -0800 An Interesting Way To Determine Christiansburg's Budget http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/an-interesting-way-to-determine-christiansbur http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/an-interesting-way-to-determine-christiansbur Christiansburg is undertaking what is, in my opinion, an interesting way of determining how they'll allocate spending in the next budget cycle.

They're giving residents $100 hypothetical tax dollars to spend as they see most appropriate:

We are inviting the people who live, work and pay taxes in Christiansburg to participate in an exercise designed to understand their priorities for town spending. In the exercise, you are given $100 hypothetical “tax dollars” to allocate among the goals Christiansburg thinks are most important, so we can evaluate which services are of the highest value to our community.

It's called priority based budgeting - fancy term to ask "how would you spend the money" - but I like the concept.

Residents have until March 25th to provide responses.  You can find out more information, and download the form, here.

Sun, 20 Feb 2011 09:08:41 -0800 An official - or unofficial - response to the Play Fair Tech campaign http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/an-official-or-unofficial-response-to-the-pla http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/an-official-or-unofficial-response-to-the-pla
From today's Op Ed section in the New River Valley Current:

Let's get straight about the meals tax discussion. The unfair competition argument is a red herring. No normal consumer travels to campus, hunts for an expensive parking spot and fights student crowds to avoid a few cents on a dining hall meal purchase. Even if the university could collect taxes, the collections are estimated to be about $40,000 annually. This pales in comparison to the voluntary $250,000 annual franchise fee paid to the town by VT Electric Services.

The facts are facts.  There's far more money being dumped into Montgomery County, and Town of Blacksburg coffers, by the university then just a meals tax.  And all of the New River Valley (and the region) will be benefit by having the new arts complex in our backyard.  We use their campus, we put a drain on their resources, and then we nickel and dime them on a meals. Tax.

Whether Larry Hincker is providing an official response by Virginia Tech to the Play Fair Tech campaign or not, it's an excellent commentary outlining the REAL financial benefits the university brings to our region.

Fri, 14 Jan 2011 06:56:00 -0800 Blacksburg moves forward on Black House - from Roanoke.com http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/blacksburg-moves-forward-on-black-house-from http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/blacksburg-moves-forward-on-black-house-from

BLACKSBURG -- Town council keyed in on future projects and agreements during Tuesday's meeting, the first of 2011.

The $2 million Alexander Black House restoration project moved forward, as council voted unanimously to sign a $155,000 contract with Glave & Holmes Architecture.

Conceptual design has been completed for the project, and council's vote allows the firm to join the restoration effort.

Plans are to fund the restoration from a general obligation bond.

Of the $2 million in planned expenditures, 75 percent is to be raised privately by the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation.

The $1.5 million from the museum will go toward repayment of that bond. Museum Administrator Terry Nicholson said the fundraising efforts are in the silent phase at this point, but plans are to make an announcement in March.

It's about time!

Tue, 26 Oct 2010 06:33:12 -0700 Sustainable Energy Sources in Blacksburg - Wind Power http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/sustainable-energy-sources-in-blacksburg-wind http://jeremyhart.posterous.com/sustainable-energy-sources-in-blacksburg-wind Did you know that Blacksburg has its own wind turbine?  I didn't either, honestly, until last night, when I attended a focus group to discuss sustainable energy sources as part of the Town's Climate plan.

There's information about the project, and real-time stats.  Something interesting I learned ... those high-gust winds we often get in winter?  Blacksburg doesn't have the sustained winds necessary to make energy sourced from wind turbines feasible ... but the counties of Giles and Floyd do.  Co-op, anyone?
